North Stars knock off Miners

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The Thunder Bay North Stars picked up a goal and three assists from Ryan Mignault to win their fifth Superior International Junior Hockey League game in a row Friday as they knocked off the English River Miners 7-2 at the Fort William Gardens.

Thunder Bay started strong grabbing a 2-0 lead after one period of play on markers from Bradley Thrower and Alex Maticic.

Maticic’s second of the night at 5:58 of the middle frame added to the North Stars cushion before Avery Siau connected on the power play later in the frame to put the home team up by four.

Nic Herringer put the Miners on the board early in the third only to see Owen Belisle strike shorthanded at 3:21 to make it 5-1.

Brendan Gillis added to the Thunder Bay cushion after that before Herringer converted during a man advantage opportunity at 11:35 for his second of the night.

Mignault would cap off his four-point affair with his 14th of the season to round out the scoring.

Siau chipped in with two assists to go with his goal.

The North Stars’ Brandon Bodnar made 23 saves to record the win.

Westin Cardwell started for English River and suffered the loss allowing six against on 27 attempts while Michael Lenko handled two of three in relief.
