Special teams sends Thunder Bay past Minnesota

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – The Thunder Bay North Stars used the strength of four power play goals, including three in the third period, to pull out a 6-1 victory over the Minnesota Iron Rangers Friday in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

Thunder Bay opened the scoring 11:50 into the contest on John Parrott’s fourth of the season only to see Minnesota respond with a Jack Stensgard power play effort 72 seconds later as he picked up his 12th tally of 2016-17.

The North Stars got the eventual game-winner in the first minute of the second stanza when Jake Robinson connected during a man advantage opportunity.

Troy Sherman upped the visitor’s leads at 4:59 as they took a 3-1 cushion into the final frame.

In the third, Thunder Bay put the game away by striking three times on the power play to secure the victory.

Sherman added his second of the night and 13th overall at 8:20 while defenceman Joe Newhouse and affiliate forward Lucas Sandberg, with his first SIJHL goal, wrapped things up with a pair of late markers.

The North Stars outshot the Iron Rangers 41-28 on the night with Nathaniel Dupuis picking up the win and Jackson Nelson the loss.
