English River completes weekend sweep of Thunder Bay

RED LAKE, Ont. – Sidney Gladue scored twice, including the game-winner, and assisted on two others to help lead the English River Miners to a 5-2 victory over the Thunder Bay North Stars Sunday afternoon in a Superior International Junior Hockey League matinee at Cochenour Arena.

It took the Miners two and a half minutes into the contest to take the lead in this one as Austin Kuhn collected his first SIJHL goal to send the home side on their way.

Special teams allowed the North Stars to tie it late in the frame when Brendan Gillis connected on the power play with seven seconds left in the stanza.

A pair of man advantage opportunities allowed English River to strike twice in the middle session and go up 3-1 after two on markers by Kuhn midway through the period and Gladue with just three seconds left.

Up a man Thunder Bay pulled to within in with 9:19 remaining via Jesse Talakoski, but the Miners put it away late compliments of efforts supplied by Jamie Driedger and Gladue to finish off a second consecutive triumph over the North Stars.

Ryder Prue dished out a pair of assists for English River while Nicholas Nigro had two helpers for the visitors as he extended a consecutive game point streak to 10, dating back to last season, while raising his SIJHL-leading overall point total to 15 in 2016-17.

Spencer Eschyschyn made 32 stops in net for the Miners to record his first league win.

Nathaniel Dupuis faced 50 shots in a losing cause for Thunder Bay who dropped their third straight game after starting 5-0.
