North stars knock off Iron Rangers

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – The Thunder Bay North Stars picked up goals from five different skaters Friday to help them knock off the Minnesota Iron Rangers 5-2 in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

Thunder Bay picked up the lone tally of the first period late as Keighan Gerrie connected at 19:04.

A pair of early markers in the second stanza helped the North Stars extend their lead to three with Troy Sherman and Brad Thrower both finding the back of the net before the session was five minutes old.

Minnesota got on the board at 7:34 as Clayton Brown connected on a man advantage opportunity with assists going to Mark Sanchez and Eli Kinsman.

Zac Horn pulled the Iron Rangers to within one with over eight minutes remaining in the third but Thunder Bay came back a couple shifts later to get that back on an Avery Siau effort.

The visitors then got some insurance in the late going as Alex Irwin rounded out the scoring for the North Stars at 17:55.

Alex Maticic and newcome Kyle Auger had two assists each for Thunder Bay.

Dougie Newhouse made 19 saves to pick-up the win while Tyler Thompson faced 47 shots in defeat for Minnesota.
