North Stars soar past Lakers

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The Thunder Bay North Stars trio of Keighan Gerrie, Jacob Brown and Kyle Auger combined for nine points to lead their side to a 9-1 decision over the Fort Frances Lakers Tuesday in a Superior International Junior Hockey League match-up Tuesday at the Fort William Gardens.

Thunder Bay started strong in the first period on tallies from Maxime Fortin, Jayden Mrakic and Ben Erwin.

Fort Frances did get one back late in the frame on Noah Loveday’s eighth of the season with help from Brett Hahkala and Jaedin Ness.

However, the North Stars broke it open in the middle session by tacking on three more on markers from Brendan Gillis, Gerrie and defenceman Matthew Halushak.

They then capped off the victory in the third on goals from Jonathan Kilby, Ryan Mignault and Brown.

Auger had three assists for Thunder Bay.

In net, Dougie Newhouse made 26 save to record the win for the Stars.

Jacob Gnidziejko started for the Lakers and suffered the loss allowing five on 24 attempts while Matt Booth stopped 31 of 35 in over 37 minutes of relief.
