North Stars roll over Lakers

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The Thunder Bay North Stars got two goals apiece from Nicholas Nigro and Jake Robinson to help lead them to a 6-1 victory over the Fort Frances Lakers Wednesday night in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at the Fort William Gardens.

It was close through one period of play as the initial stanza went scoreless.

Thunder Bay blew it open however in the middle stanza as they struck four times in under an eight-minute span to take control of the contest.

After Robinson scored on the power play at 8:19 of the session, Austin Storm connected at even strength 75 seconds later to put the home side up by two.

Robinson added his second of the night at 11:47 while Nigro scored during a man advantage opportunity at 16:02 to extend the North Stars cushion.

Thunder Bay picked up their third man-up marker of the evening early in the third on a Brendan Gillis effort to go up by five while Nigro notched another to reach the 25-goal goal plateau for a third consecutive season at 5:47.

Matt Tustin of Frances wrapped up the scoring at 9:01 of the third as they put an end to North Stars netminder Jordan Elliott’s shutout bid.

Brad Thrower and Brad Arabia dished out two assists each to aid the Thunder Bay cause.

Elliott did finish with 23 saves to record the win while Jessie Heisz faced 42 shots in a losing cause for the Lakers.
