North Stars start February with shutout of Lakers

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – After a disappointing 2-7-1-0 record in January the Thunder Bay North Stars regained form to begin February by riding a 30-save shutout from Jordan Elliot to defeat the Fort Frances Lakers 4-0 in a Superior International Junior Hockey League contest at the Fort William Gardens.

Action in the opening 20 minutes was scoreless.

Thunder Bay would begin the night’s scoring five and a half minutes into the middle stanza on Tyler Minoletti’s seventh of the season.

They then picked up an important second marker on special teams just prior to the siren going to conclude the session as Brad Thrower struck shorthanded at 19:59.

Brad Arabia reached the 20-goal plateau 12:13 into the third to give the North Stars some insurance while Jake Robinson iced it 52 seconds later to round things out offensively.

Troy Sherman and Ryan Walsh dished out two assists apiece to aid the winner’s cause.

The shutout for Elliot was his first in the SIJHL.

Jessie Heisz faced 28 shots in defeat for Fort Frances, who were blanked for the first time since back on Nov. 28, 2015 when they fell 3-0 at home to the North Stars.
