Lakers erupt in 3rd to rock Norskies

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – The Fort Frances Lakers erupted for five unanswered goals in the third period to bust open a tie game as they went on to rock the Thief River Falls Norskies 6-1 Friday night in a Superior International Junior Hockey League match-up Friday at Ice for Kids Arena.

Fort Frances picked up the lone marker in the opening period thanks to Jack Bernie’s seventh of the campaign midway through the session.

Thief River Falls used the power play to knot the affair at 1-1 in the middle stanza as Mitchell Soderberg supplied his 11th of the season at 15:56.

The flood gates opened in the third for the Lakers as they found the back of the net five times to win going away.

The offensive outburst started 65 seconds into the frame as Tyler Malpass converted on an early man advantage opportunity to supply the eventual game-winner.

Bernie’s second of the evening at 9:27 put the home side up by two.

Fort Frances kept coming and added another from Ian Jarvis at 14:08 before tacking on two more, via the power play, in the late going off the sticks of Brandon Zajicek and Jared Virtanen to round out the scoring.

Virtanen also chipped in with two assists on the night as he extended a consecutive game point streak to eight in succession.

Ryan Gazich and Dylan Kooner chipped in with three helpers apiece for the Lakers while Matt Tustin had two.

Brandon Bodnar made 32 saves to record the decision for Fort Frances and Sam Novak faced 29 shots in defeat for the Norskies.
