Simonson strikes late as Thief River Falls skates past Thunder Bay

THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn. – A Parker Simsonson goal with 24 seconds left in regulation was the difference as the Thief River Falls Norskies rallied to skate past the Thunder Bay North Stars 5-4 Thursday night in a Superior International Junior Hockey League contest at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Dylan Dix put the Norskies in front 3:16 in for the lone tally of the opening period.

Thunder Bay came out strong to begin the middle stanza striking three times before the frame was eight minutes old on a pair of Nicholas Nigro markers and one by Brendan Gillis.

Thief River Falls pulled to within one however with 2:52 left in the session thanks to a Mitchell Soderberg man advantage effort.

Jared Peterson at even strength and Reily McIntosh, via the power play, tied it then put the home side back into the lead.

The North Stars levelled the proceedings once again at 17:28 as Joe Newhouse scored while the visitors were up a man.

Then with overtime looming, Simonson struck late to win it for the Norskies to help them sweep a two-game set from Thunder Bay.

Jack Dunnell chipped in with two assists, including one on the difference maker.

Shots on goal favoured Thief River Falls by a 42-30 count with Ryan Buttazzoni picking up the victory and Jordan Elliot the loss.
