Thrower; Mignault pace Thunder Bay to win over Fort Frances

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The Thunder Bay North Stars picked up two goals and an assist from Bradley Thrower while Ryan Mignault set-up three in a 5-1 victory over the Fort Frances Lakers Friday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at the Fort William Gardens.

Thrower sent Thunder Bay on their way with a man advantage marker eight and a half minutes into the contest as he whistled one from the left side past Lakers’ starter Brett Akins.

Fort Frances drew level later in the first period with a power play goal of their own as Jaedin Ness redirected a Nick Lucas right point shot that eluded North Stars’ netminder Dougie Newhouse.

It stayed 1-1 past the midway mark of the night when Thrower buried the eventual game-winner as he blasted the difference maker past Akins from the high slot.

Brendan Gillis then upped the Thunder Bay lead at 15:18 to put them up by two after 40 minutes.

Newcomer Tom Von Schoenberg made he mark in his SIJHL debut for the North Stars in the third as he pinched in from the point and snapped a shot that just trickled over the goal line at 6:01 for his first league tally, which came during a power play.

Alex Erwin added one more for Thunder Bay 28 seconds later to finish off the night’s scoring.

The North Stars out shot the Lakers 45-23 in the contest with Newhouse picking up the win and Akins the loss.
