North Stars double up Norkies 4-2

THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn. – A Nicholas Nigro goal with seven minutes remaining in the second period proved to be the game-winner as the Thunder Bay North Stars went on to double up the Thief River Falls Norskies 4-2 Friday in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

After Thunder Bay’s Brad Thrower opened the scoring, while his club was shorthanded, at 12:49 of the first, Thief River Falls came back with the equalizer, via the power play, 55 seconds later from Michael Johnson.

Down a man late in the first the Norskies struck with a buzzer beater as Johnson scored again just as time was set to expire in the frame.

The North Stars regrouped in the middle session to tie it at 7:16 thanks to Brett Wolframe and then got the eventual game-winner off the stick of Nigro to put the visitors back in front for good.

It remained tight-checking the remainder of the night with Thunder Bay not securing the win until Tyler Minoletti iced it with an empty netter with eight seconds to go in the contest to round out the scoring.

Jordan Elliott made 31 stops to record the win for the North Stars while Ryan Buttazzoni faced 41 shots in defeat for the Norskies.
