Thunder Bay tops Thief River Falls in shootout

THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn. – A Tyler Minoletti tally in the fifth round of the shootout was the difference as the Thunder Bay North Stars rallied to edge the Thief River Falls Norskies 4-3 Saturday in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

After Brett Wolframe was denied on a penalty shot at 7:27, Thunder Bay did open the scoring midway through the first as Brad Arabia scored on the power play.

Action in the second stanza saw the Norskies’ Keaton Huot tie it early in the frame while teammate Alec Daman struck shorthanded to put the home side up 2-1 after two.

Logan Jackson then made it 3-1 Thief River Falls seven and a half minutes into the third.

The North Stars began their comeback at 14:12 when Brendan Gillis pulled the guests to within one before Troy Sherman forced overtime with 3:22 left in regulation.

After a scoreless five-minute OT solved nothing, extra shots were required to determine a winner.

There, Arabia and Minoletti connected for Thunder Bay and Daman had the lone marker for the Norskies as the North Stars skated away with the second point on the night.

Jake Robinson had two assists for the winners while Michael Johnson had a couple of helpers for TRF.

Thunder Bay outshot Thief River Falls 42-36 with Dan Demaria picking up the win and Ryan Buttazzoni suffered the setback, but helped his team earn a point.
