North Stars rally to edge Lakers in shootout

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – A Brett Wolframe goal in the fourth round of the shootout helped the Thunder Bay North Stars rally for a 4-3 triumph over the Fort Frances Lakers Friday in a Superior International Junior Hockey League contest at the Fort William Gardens.

Special teams allowed the visiting Lakers to take a 2-0 lead after one period of play as Julian Uhryniuk scored on the power play at 17:38 while Jared Virtanen struck shorthanded 39 seconds later.

Up a man late in the second stanza, Thunder Bay got on the board when Aaron Wesley-Chisel converted on a North Stars man advantage opportunity.

The Fort Frances power play allowed them to regain their two-tally cushion early in the third as Uhryniuk collected his second of the evening to make it 3-1 at 1:20.

Jett Leishman pulled the home side to within one at 5:37 while Justin Muir forced overtime as he supplied the equalizer just under a minute later.

It stayed 3-3 through the rest of regulation and the five-minute OT thus sending the game into extra shots.

It was there that Wolframe notched the only marker among eight shooters to give Thunder Bay the decision.

Nathaniel Dupuis made 24 stops to record the win for the North Stars while Brandon Bodnar faced 40 attempts in defeat for the Lakers.
